Do not use this medication if you
- have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
- have had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide or any of its ingredients
- are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
Tell your provider before starting if you
- have or have had problems with your pancreas or kidneys, or severe stomach or digestive problems
- have type 2 diabetes and a history of diabetic retinopathy, or take insulin or a sulfonylurea
- have a history of depression or suicidal thoughts
- take any other prescription or over-the-counter medicines, vitamins or herbal supplements
Possible serious side effects
Semaglutide belongs to a class of medicines that caused thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents. It is not known whether it causes thyroid tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma, in people. Other serious side effects reported with this class of medicine include inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), gallbladder problems, low blood sugar (especially with insulin or a sulfonylurea), kidney problems from dehydration, severe stomach problems, changes in vision in people with type 2 diabetes, and serious allergic reactions. Stop the medication and get medical help right away if you have symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, severe stomach pain that does not go away, or a lump or swelling in your neck.
Common side effects
Nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, vomiting, constipation, indigestion, stomach pain and injection-site reactions. These are most common when starting or increasing a dose and often lessen over time.
